Harper- Maryland County: Two graduates of William V.S. Tubman University in Harper, Liberia, have embarked on a new academic chapter in India, pursuing master's degrees in Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering at AMET University.
Solomon Tugbah Nyema Jr., a 2023 graduate in civil engineering, and Lucidia Mackaylane Sherman, who earned her degree in mechanical engineering earlier this year, are the first Liberians to enter the specialized field. Their studies are being funded through full scholarships provided by the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA).
Both candidates secured admission after excelling in LiMA's competitive home-based examination and the Graduate Record Examination. University officials described their acceptance as evidence of the caliber of Tubman University's engineering program.
"This milestone reflects TU's vision of producing graduates ready to lead on the global stage," said Dr. Olu Q. Menjay, the university's president and chief executive officer.
Nyema and Sherman have pledged to return to Liberia upon completion of their studies, with the aim of strengthening the nation's maritime and offshore engineering sector, a field seen as critical to Liberia's long-term economic growth.
