The Writing and Reading Center is designed to provide significant, student-centered academic support outside the classroom for students from all colleges and professional areas at William V.S. Tubman University. The Center will offer writing and reading resources and instructional services to assist students with their assignments, all at no cost. Students will have access to information that can aid them in various writing and reading projects.
The Center aims to foster a reading and writing culture beyond the classroom while promoting a positive attitude toward research. It will serve as a personalized academic resource in a friendly, supportive, and collaborative environment, enabling students from various colleges to develop the skills and confidence necessary for academic success. Support services will include one-on-one and group tutorials, workshops, and assistance for faculty across all disciplines.
The rationale for establishing the Center is multifaceted. Students at the University are required to complete term papers, conduct academic research, prepare coursework, and review scholarly articles, journals, books, and other educational materials. Many students face challenges stemming from inadequate academic preparation in writing and reading during high school, leading to a significantly underdeveloped writing and reading culture at William V.S. Tubman University. This deficiency negatively impacts even the most capable students’ academic performance, even after taking rigorous college-level writing and reading courses. Consequently, the Center will provide comprehensive and organized support for students as writers and readers of academic work and assignments, regardless of their skill level.
