Dr. Menjay Reaffirms Tubman University's Status as a National University

WVSTU -- September 14, 2026: The President and CEO of William V. S. Tubman University (TU), Dr. Olu Q. Menjay, has reaffirmed the institution's status as a national university, challenging perceptions that its location in southeastern Liberia diminishes its relevance or national significance.

Speaking during the university's 17th Anniversary Celebration in Harper, Dr. Menjay said Tubman University must be recognized for its national mandate, growing academic contributions, and expanding impact across Liberia.

"Let me say this clearly and unequivocally: Tubman University is not a rural university. It is a national university established by an Act of the National Legislature in 2009, funded by the people of Liberia, and mandated to serve every citizen in this Republic, regardless of county or background," Dr. Menjay affirmed.

Dr. Menjay told the gathering that the university's location in Harper has sometimes contributed to the perception that TU is primarily a regional institution. He argued, however, that geography should not determine an institution's relevance or national standing.

"Geography should never be a measure of relevance. Our presence here is a testament to the vision of our founders that quality higher education must reach every corner of Liberia, not just the capital," he said.

According to Dr. Menjay, TU's growing national footprint is reflected in the contributions of its graduates, who are serving in various capacities in the public and private sectors across Liberia.

He also pointed to the university's expanding academic programs, research activities, community engagement initiatives, and partnerships with institutions in Liberia and abroad as evidence of TU's growing contribution to national development.

While emphasizing the need for greater national recognition and support, Dr. Menjay expressed profound gratitude to the Government of Liberia for its continued support since the establishment of the university.

He particularly highlighted support under the administration of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., citing ongoing investments in infrastructure, facilities, and improvements to the university's learning environment.

"The Government of His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. is visibly and tangibly supporting Tubman University by investing directly in our infrastructure, upgrading our facilities, improving learning environments, and bringing our campus up to standard," Dr. Menjay stated.

He urged the university community to maintain high standards of academic excellence, integrity, innovation, and service, emphasizing that TU's achievements must continue to demonstrate the institution's value and contribution to Liberia's development.

Reflecting on TU's 17-year journey, Dr. Menjay expressed appreciation to the university's founders, successive administrations, faculty, staff, students, alumni, government, partners, and surrounding communities whose contributions have helped shape the institution's growth and development.

"Seventeen years ago, a seed was planted in Harper.
Today, that seed has grown into a tree whose branches stretch across this nation. Let no one reduce this tree to the soil in which it stands. Tubman University belongs to all of Liberia," Dr. Menjay concluded.

Celebrated under the theme, "Seventeen Years of Excellence: Advancing Knowledge, Innovation, and Service," the anniversary brought together students, faculty, staff, alumni, religious and traditional leaders, community members, and government officials.

Liberia's Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Hon. Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, served as Guest of Honor and keynote speaker at the celebration.
