WVST- At William V. S. Tubman University in Maryland County, a new group of nurses and midwives officially stepped into the health profession during a colorful capping, candle lighting, and badging program held on Saturday, September 13, 2025.
The event welcomed 35 student nurses and 9 midwives into the field. With candles lit and badges pinned, they marked their move from training to service, a step filled with both pride and responsibility.
Dr. Shadrack K. Gono, who served as the keynote speaker, told the graduates that their work goes beyond skills and knowledge, it is about compassion.
"Healthcare is about serving others," he said. "You are called to be healers and helpers. Be a light of hope for your patients."
He reminded them that the chosen theme, "A Journey of Purpose: The Courage to Care," was more than words. It calls for commitment, respect for human dignity, and courage in difficult times.
Also speaking at the occasion was the dean of the College of Health Sciences, Dr. Joseph Augustus Verdier, Dr. Verdier praised the faculty for preparing the students through both classroom lessons and hands-on training. He thanked parents for trusting the university with their children's education and encouraged the new nurses and midwives to carry forward the values they have learned.
The ceremony, held at the Tubman Pavilion, highlighted tradition and transition, lighting candles as a sign of dedication, placing badges as a symbol of readiness, and bridging midwives to begin their service.
For the graduates, it was not just a day of celebration but the start of a career built on service, compassion, and courage.
